Four suspension series, every one of them load rated and vehicle specific valved, every one backed by a 4 year unlimited mile warranty. Here is how they compare, series by series.
Five things that decide which suspension belongs under your vehicle.
Choose the series built for the toughest thing you ask of your vehicle, not the easiest.

Every shock turns wheel movement into heat. How much oil it holds and how it handles that heat decides whether damping is still there at the end of a long day.
Both products do the same job at this tier: height and tire clearance without breaking the bank. The difference is what arrives. Our Lift & Level kits contain all the necessary components you need to lift your truck and get bigger tires, and many of them include twin tube shocks with linear valving and extended travel. Rough Country's leveling products are spacers, nuts and washers that bolt onto the factory strut, and on many applications they lift the front only.
Then there is the upgrade path. When you outgrow height alone, Lift & Level steps up into Nitro Gas, Foam Cell Pro or IM2.5 on the same vehicle, each of them load rated and each backed by 4 years and unlimited miles.
On the damper alone these two are close. Same body diameter, same piston. That is exactly why the spring is the decision.
Nitro Gas is configurable to how you drive. Light, Medium, Medium Plus, Heavy and Extra Heavy, typically 2 to 3 options for front and 2 to 3 options for rear on your platform, with the valving matched to the spring the kit ships with. Put a winch and a steel bumper on the front, or drawers and a second battery in the back, and you order the rating built for that weight.
Rough Country publishes no load rating and offers no heavy load variant. One spring per part number, whatever you have bolted to the vehicle. And we cover the whole kit for 4 years and unlimited miles against their 3 years on shocks.
There is nothing to put in the other column, and that is the point. Rough Country's published shock range is built on two architectures, nitrogen charged twin-tube in the N3, and monotube behind an internal floating piston in the M1, M1R, V2 and Vertex. Every one of them still carries a pressurised nitrogen charge. Foam Cell Pro uses a third approach.
Foam cell technology replaces that nitrogen charge with a closed cell foam structure that physically separates oil from gas. The foam takes up less room inside the tube than a gas charge would, so there is more space for oil, and the oil cannot aerate against the gas. That is what holds damping steady deep into a long, loaded, corrugated day, and it is why we call it virtually indestructible with almost no maintenance.
It also does that without a remote reservoir. We considered one and chose not to build it: a canister is expensive and awkward to package. Managing the heat inside a big bore body instead means there is no external hose or canister to route, protect or inspect, which matters most on exactly the trips where a damaged line is a long way from help.
And when the day comes, it is serviced rather than scrapped. We sell the Foam Cell Pro seal kit as a part, because the shock is designed to be stripped, resealed and revalved. Rough Country publishes no rebuild kit, no seal kit and no service program for any of its shock lines, so the published remedy there is a new pair.
And it is not only an overlanding shock. Foam Cell Pro is built for daily driven trucks and SUVs as much as for loaded overland rigs, so the same set that holds up on washboard is the set you commute on the rest of the week. If you want to get out and explore without thinking about your shocks, this is the one.
This is monotube against monotube. IM2.5 is our monotube series, and the M1, M1R, V2 and Vertex are theirs, so this is where the two ranges actually meet.
Read the two 2.5 figures carefully, because they measure different parts. On IM2.5 it is the body: a 2.5 inch extruded monotube in 6061-T6 aircraft grade aluminum, offering up to 4x better heat dissipation compared to stock and 30% weight saving over steel. On the Vertex it is the piston. Rough Country publishes a body diameter for the M1 only.
The Vertex brings 8 stage adjustable damping, and it and the M1R run a remote reservoir. We build neither. If dialing damping in the field is what you are shopping for, that is a real reason to choose it.
What IM2.5 gives you instead is a CNC machined billet aluminum piston with 60% more surface area for precise valve tuning, ride height adjustment at the spring seat, load rated springs in Light and Medium so the kit is still matched to what the vehicle carries, and 4 years and unlimited miles against 3.

A lift height tells you nothing about what a vehicle can carry. A spring rate does.
This matters at both ends of the vehicle. Bolt a steel bumper and a winch to the front and that weight sits over the front axle every day, so the front coil has to be rated for it or the vehicle sits nose down and works through less of its travel. Load drawers, a second battery, water and recovery gear in the back and the rear needs a spring rated for that constant weight. Our lift kit finder asks about your bumper, your winch, your drawers and your tow weight, and returns the load rating to match.
Rebuildable shocks are designed to be serviced and revalved, so you can restore peak performance instead of buying a new set.
Map your typical use across the full range, from the daily commute to the trails, and choose the option built for the toughest use you do regularly.
We use the Australian continent as our proving ground. Our suspension is engineered and field tested in desert heat, on outback tracks and across the kind of distance that punishes equipment: sustained load, relentless washboard and a long way from the nearest shop. That is the environment Foam Cell Pro was built for, and it is why our range is organized by load rating and not by lift height alone.
IRONMAN 4X4 traces back to a Melbourne suspension manufacturer founded in 1958. Our products have been specified by fleet and military organizations and have completed the Dakar Rally.
Kit contents differ more between platforms than they do between brands, so make the comparison on the vehicle you actually drive.
On independent front suspension trucks, the Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra, Ford F-150 and Lexus GX, the entry route to lift is often a strut spacer that leaves the factory coil and its load capacity untouched. Every IRONMAN 4X4 suspension kit replaces the spring, and you choose the rating. Owners running a bumper and a winch on a Tacoma or a 4Runner are the clearest case for a load rated front coil, and heavily loaded overland Tundras and Land Cruisers are the clearest case for Foam Cell Pro.
For ride height on a road biased truck, they do the job and they back hard components with a lifetime replacement term. The limits are the ones that matter once the vehicle carries weight: no published load ratings, no rebuild path on any shock line, and 3 years on shocks. If your truck runs a bumper, a winch, drawers or a tent, you want a spring rated for that weight.
You can. If a product raises the vehicle without replacing the spring, spring rate and load capacity stay exactly where they were while the tires get heavier and the geometry changes. Stock shocks are tuned for a near empty vehicle on smooth road. Add a bumper, a winch or a rooftop tent and that factory setup quickly loses control, comfort and safety margin. Replacing the spring with one rated for your load and matching the valving to it is what makes it an upgrade.
No, it is a specific tool with specific limits, and we build one ourselves. Lift & Level raises ride height and clears bigger tires without breaking the bank, and it includes all the necessary components and hardware to do it properly. What a spacer does not do is add load capacity, because the spring has not changed. The moment the vehicle carries permanent weight, you want a full suspension kit with a load rated spring.
More lift isn't automatically better. Extra height increases the geometry and driveline compromises you're managing, and many owners lift mainly to clear a tire, which a lower setting may already achieve. Decide your tire target first, then choose the height that gets you there.
Tire size on its own doesn't answer this. Wheel width, offset, caster and whether you're willing to trim all change the result, and two 33s from different brands can measure differently. Check the fitment listed on the kit for your exact year and generation, and confirm your wheel offset before you order tires.
There's no single lift height at which arms become mandatory. It depends on the vehicle, the height you run and the alignment you're trying to reach. We handle this by making arms a defined Stage 2 step rather than something you research separately after the kit arrives. Our Pro Forge upper control arms are drop forged with 4 degrees of caster correction to bring lifted geometry back toward factory specification.
Yes. A professional alignment is required after installing a suspension lift. Factor it into the total cost of the job rather than the price of the box.
Beyond the kit itself, budget for a professional alignment, and check whether your build needs upper control arms and driveline hardware. Our kits are sold in Stages so the supporting parts are a defined step rather than a surprise: Stage 2 adds Pro Forge upper control arms, Stage 3 adds an adjustable rear panhard bar and extended sway bar links, and Stage 4 adds adjustable rear lower trailing arms. The parts list for your vehicle is on the kit page.
Ride quality isn't decided by the brand badge alone. Spring rate, how much weight the truck carries, the lift setting, tire construction and tire pressure all move it significantly. What we control is matching the spring and the damper to the intended use rather than selling one setup for every build, which is why Nitro Gas, Foam Cell Pro and IM2.5 exist as separate series and why each one is offered in load ratings.
No rebuild kit, seal kit or rebuild service is published by Rough Country for the N3, the M1, the V2 or the Vertex. The remedy is replacement. On our side, Nitro Gas is a fixed damping tier and is serviceable but not rebuildable. Foam Cell Pro is the rebuildable system, which is the main reason to step up if you expect long term ownership or remote travel.
The lifetime term applies to hard suspension components such as control arms, brackets and lift blocks, against welds cracking or breakage. It is not a lifetime warranty on the kit. Shocks are covered for 3 years and bushings and ball joints for 1. Every IRONMAN 4X4 lift kit carries one term across the whole kit: 4 years, unlimited miles.
Our coils are CNC cold wound and bar peeled, shot blasted, preset to solid height and load tested to guard against sag. The other half of the answer is choosing the right load rating for the weight you carry, which is why every suspension series is offered in load ratings, Light through Extra Heavy on Nitro Gas and Foam Cell Pro and Light and Medium on IM2.5, rather than one spring per part number. Expect around half an inch of settle on Foam Cell Pro front coilovers in the first miles, then check and reset ride height on the threaded body.
Lift & Level for height and bigger tires on a daily driven truck. Nitro Gas for weekend warriors who want a full suspension upgrade at the best price point. Foam Cell Pro for overlanders and heavily loaded rigs that need load support, heat management and a rebuildable shock. IM2.5 for performance enthusiasts who want monotube precision and the smoothest ride on and off road. Our lift kit finder picks the series and the load rating for your vehicle in about a minute.
Answer a few questions about your vehicle, your accessories and how you load it, and we will return the series and the load rating to match.
