DOING THE HEAVY LIFTING

Why is it that shock absorbers get all the cool names and technology when springs are doing all the heavy lifting? When selecting suspension, the first component we look at is the 4×4 spring. The springs are the component that does the actual suspending; the right spring is imperative to ensure your vehicle remains both capable and comfortable.

Ironman 4×4 initially started life as a spring works manufacturer, which means we’ve been making springs since 1958. Because of this, we like to think we know a thing or two on the topic!

SPRING SELECTION

Whether it be a leaf spring, coil spring, or torsion bar, each Ironman 4×4 spring is designed and manufactured specifically to suit each make and model.

We then offer a range of different springs and spring-packs to suit the most common loads of your vehicle.

EVERY INCH COUNTS

Ironman 4×4 springs don’t just offer greater load-carrying capacity, they also offer improved clearance which increases approach, departure, and ramp over angles when off-road, as well as being very popular while fitting larger diameter tyres.

Larger tyres also improve your off-road ability with a larger rolling diameter for getting over obstacles and a greater footprint when deflated for improved traction.

LEAF SPRINGS, COIL SPRINGS AND COIL-OVER STRUTS

As a general rule, you can’t choose the type of spring to upgrade in your vehicle; the vehicle manufacturer sets the initial suspension design and then we look at improved and stronger versions of the same core spring design to improve your ride and handling.

Leaf Springs for 4x4 suspension

LEAF SPRINGS

Leaf springs are extremely strong and capable, as they are made of multiple layers of spring steel that are bound together and shaped into an arc. With their durability and high load capacity, leaf springs are most commonly installed in the rear of the vehicle. They are particularly effective for vehicles that experience high rear payloads, such as utility vehicles and pickup trucks. In addition, with their modular design, you can add or remove individual leaves to adjust your vehicle’s ride height.

Coil Springs for 4x4 Suspension

COIL SPRINGS

Coil springs are helical-shaped and made from spring steel. They are designed to compress and expand depending on how force is applied. While coil springs may not have a load capacity as high as leaf springs, coil springs make up for it with their focus on ride quality, as they offer a comfortable ride and smooth handling. As a balanced spring, it is popular with many vehicle types, from old Nissan Patrols to LandCruisers, and can be found on both the front and rear parts of your suspension.

Coil-over Struts for 4x4 suspension

COIL-OVER STRUTS

With the introduction of independent suspension systems in modern vehicles, coil-over struts have gained popularity. Coil-over struts combine a coil spring and a shock absorber into a single unit, providing a compact and efficient suspension solution. This design allows for better control over the vehicle’s ride height and variable rate damping characteristics, leading to better handling and performance.
