 CRITICAL FOR TYRE MANAGEMENT

When 4WDing at any level, tyre choice & management are the most important aspects for comfort, safety, and performance. Your tyres are what determine the level of traction you have with the road surface and ultimately are one of the most relied-on components of your vehicle.

One of the first lessons anyone should learn about off roading is the important of tyre pressures, and how and when to change them to suit both the surface you are driving on and the speed at which you are driving.  Off roading almost always requires air to be let out of your tyres to allow the tyre a larger footprint while also allowing it more sidewall flex to conform around objects on the track, however it is equally as important to run appropriate tyre pressure on the black stuff!

One of the first lessons anyone should learn about off-roading is the importance of tyre pressure, specifically how and when to change them to suit both the surface you are driving on and the speed at which you are driving.  Off roading almost always requires air to be let out of your tyres to allow the tyre a larger footprint while also allowing it more sidewall flex to conform around objects on the track. However, it is equally as important to run appropriate tyre pressure on the black stuff!

In normal circumstances driving on low tyre pressures, with greater traction means more heat at speed and a great potential to destroy your tyres in the form of a blow-out!

Carrying a compressor in your vehicle is critical to tyre management. As you need to let the air out, AND, you need to be able to put air back in.

Air compressors use compressed air at different levels of air pressure for tyre inflation. While Ironman 4×4 4WD compressors are built for serious off-road use, they are versatile enough to be used in other scenarios like running air tools, activating differential lockers or even reseating a tyre.

When considering your air compressor you should consider the different types of air compressors available to you, deciding between the popular electric air compressors or the engine driven air compressors which run off diesel or petrol. Nowadays an electric air compressor is preferred over their engine driven air compressor counterpart as they are generally quieter, as well as more affordable and portable. That’s not to say that an engine driven compressor doesn’t have its advantages – their output is typically much higher and they can run for longer as they don’t get hot as quickly.

Another thing to think about when purchasing an air compressor is whether or not you need a portable unit as many air compressors will need to be mounted. Having a portable air compressor will be preferred if you want to do more than just inflate tyres as it will be easier to move around for whatever you need.

Your safety is our utmost priority and as such we have implemented safety features to ensure this. Our air compressors have insulated battery clamps to minimise the potential for burns and a thermal cutoff switch that acts as a circuit breaker protection if your unit overheats.
